There is merely one maxim that will be followed with the passion and zeal of a supreme hincha thirsting for glory: never turn your back on your homeland; more so, never turn your back on your homeland to play for the Spanish.

The moment that you slide the jersey over your shoulders and down your back, when the Spanish emblem – that for so many years was the symbol of colonial oppression and exploitation – adorns your breast, it is over.

So, when you miss a penalty, it’s your own fault. I, like other Latin Americans, will not be throwing luck your way.

You’re on your own.
